This summer Manchester United smashed their club record for the signature of Argentine winger Angel Di Maria. United spent £59.7 million to bring him in from Real Madrid this summer as Louis van Gaal looked to turn his new team around after a disappointing 2013-14.
So far it has certainly looked like a well worthwhile buy. He has been in exceptional form for the club since his arrival, scoring and assisting goals for fun for the Red Devils.
And he has been doing it all in an iconic United shirt number.
Di Maria was handed the number 7 shirt by United, who felt he would be more than capable of filling the boots of club legends to have worn the coveted number.
And it is an honour not lost on the Argentine.
He has been speaking to the official Manchester United website about wearing the famous kit, and he admitted that the shirt number has certainly motivated him to perform his best for United:
“It is a source of motivation. When you wear a shirt that’s been worn by the likes of David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s something you’re always going to be pleased about. The fact that the club have chosen to give me that shirt number also gives me a huge confidence boost, so that’s why I’m very happy to have this number.”
And he has not let the past legends down.
Who knows, continue like this, and he might just become United's favourite ever number 7.
