Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria says advice from Cristiano Ronaldo helped him decide to move to the club.
The Argentine was being linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain at the same time rumours of a move to United started to gather pace, with Louis van Gaal’s team eventually completing a £60 million deal.
“Before we knew I was coming to Manchester, he told me it’s a massive club, I would be very happy here and it would be good for me,” said Di Maria.
“At that time we didn’t know for sure that I was coming or not, so we didn’t go into great detail, but what he did say helped me greatly to make my decision.”
Ronaldo has always spoken warmly of his time at Manchester United and has managed to maintain a positive relationship with his old club.
That’s due partly to the fact he was allowed to leave by Sir Alex Ferguson, which meant no hard feeling was created, and also because he’s never ruled out returning, which pleases the fans.
Ronaldo is also well placed to advise any player on what it’s like to settle in and develop at United.
He went to Old Trafford as an extremely young man and United turned him partly into the player he’s become today.
Therefore, he’s got great experience of what it’s like to move to United and can only say positive things about the way the club helped him develop in the early stages of his career.
The situation with Di Maria was different because he went to United as an already established player.
However, it would have been naïve of him not to consult one of the club’s most popular ex-players and someone he got on extremely well with during his time at the Bernabeu.
If Ronaldo can persuade more players to join United in the future, no one connected to Old Trafford will complain.
