Why Inter may be in pole position for Arsenal linked midfielder

Arsenal have been linked with Lyon midfielder Clément Grenier but the player's agent has hinted that Italy is the most likely destination.

Arsenal, Everton, Southampton and Newcastle were all linked with Clément Grenier in the summer but a groin injury may have stopped anyone stepping in.

The talented 23-year-old attacking midfielder has been at Lyon since 2009 but there are suggestions that he is ready for a new challenge.

Grenier's style of play seems well suited to the Premier League and to Arsenal in particular, but Inter are now being frequently linked with a January move despite his injury woes.

"The lad is out injured at the moment, has been for two months, but he'll be back in training at the start of December," agent Frederic Guerra told FcInterNews.it.

"We will have to wait a bit to talk about the transfer market. I spoke to Inter about Grenier two years ago but there wasn't any contact last year.

"Would Clément like to join Inter? At the moment this sadly isn't a situation we can talk about. The player feels almost more Italian than French, but I don't want to say that his next destination will be Italy at this stage."

Inter scouts reportedly likened Grenier to Brazilian star Kaka when they saw him at a young age and the Nerazzurri are still believed to harbour an affection for him.

Much will depend on whether Grenier can get himself back to full match fitness and dispel any doubts over injury problems ahead of the January window.
