The latest Manchester United news, views and rumours.

Luke Shaw

England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate thinks Luke Shaw's call-up to the Under-21 squad will benefit Manchester United.

The United left-back has been included in Southgate's squad for their upcoming qualifiers against Croatia (both home and away) and not the Three Lions' senior squad.

And the Under-21 coach believes playing two matches in a row for his side would benefit Shaw ahead of his return to United - claiming that boss Louis van Gaal is very 'positive' about the decision.

“It's great for us that Shaw is here. From his club’s perspective, playing two matches would be good and I know that Louis van Gaal was very positive about it," Southgate told reporters.

“Also, as Louis was a manager of a national team and has spoken so much about the importance of the Under-21s for Holland, we didn’t think we were going to have an issue from the club.

"I just know from the conversation about Luke with Roy Hodgson that he was very positive about him coming and playing matches for us, first and foremost."

Wayne Rooney

Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson says he has apologised to Man United and England captain Wayne Rooney about alleged comments made in regard to his 'accent.'

Hodgson is said to have remarked that Rooney's Liverpuddlian accent makes him far from ideal for public speaking.

"I apologised about the headline," the England boss told reporters. "He knows it wasn't aimed at him or anyone from Liverpool. My wife's from Liverpool."
