Manchester United fans split on Twitter over Wayne Rooney to Monaco rumours

Monaco are interested in signing Wayne Rooney.

Over the past 48 hours reports have emerged that AS Monaco want to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United.

What may seem like a far-fetched transfer, is offset by Monaco's vice-chairman's enthusiasm to make the deal happen.

Vadim Vasilyev, vice-president, said: "One year ago, we were discussing one of the top players of the Premier League, a top English player

"But it was on the table. This opportunity finally did not happen, but I think one day that it will come, that it will happen."

Rooney is United's top earner, and club captain. Moving him on is highly unlikely, but manager Louis van Gaal is not one to shy away from big decisions.

An added intrigue in the deal comes in the fact Monaco own Radamel Falcao, who they have loaned to Manchester United, and the two clubs are likely to negotiate over a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

There is too, in the background, talk United could launch a major bid for Cristiano Ronaldo, so could Rooney be sold onto free up funds and wage space?

It sounds far fetched, but so too did a suggestion United would sign Radamel Falcao on loan, before it actually happened.

Rooney and his family are thought to be happy in Manchester, but Monaco are one of the few sides in football who have the capability of matching his salary, with the added benefit of the country's tax laws.

Fans of the club were certainly split in their opinion on the reports:
