Reports this morning revealed that Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil will go for an MRI scan to examine the extent of a thigh problem.
The news will come as a blow to the Gunners who lost another key midfielder in the last international break; Aaron Ramsey.
It’s too early to say how long Ozil will be out for but the news is likely to frustrate several Arsenal fans who have already seen their side’s fortunes affected this season by international football.
By the time the current international break is over, we’ll be two months into the new campaign with one of those months having already been lost to international friendly games and the start of the Euro 2016 qualifiers.
Although Ozil has been inconsistent this season, he remains one of the club’s key players because he’s capable of turning a game in Arsenal’s favour in a split second with a key pass and an impressive piece of vision.
There have been plenty of suggestions as to why Ozil’s form has dipped with the main one being that he’s featuring in a wider position, which moves him away from the central areas where he’s more effective.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher recently said that the reason for that could be that Arsene Wenger doesn’t trust his £42.5 million man to do the business through the middle of the team in big games.
Arsenal are blessed in terms of the central midfield players they have available and it is likely to mean a chance for Santi Cazorla to perform in the number ten role and make that position in the Arsenal side his own.
We’ll find out more after the international break when Arsene Wenger is able to give regular updates on the state of Ozil’s fitness.
