Spanish newspaper El Confidencial has revealed that everything was in place for Arsenal to re-sign Cesc Fabregas at the start of the summer.
Arsene Wenger overlooked the chance to bring the Spaniard back to the Emirates, which is a decision he’s since been criticised for and El C claims he had the chance to do just that with Bayern Munich interested in Mesut Ozil.
“Pep Guardiola tried again this summer to sign Mesut Ozil for his Bayern Munich,” reports El C.
“Guardiola insisted that Ozil was a strategic signing – Arsene Wenger had the opportunity to do good business and in return, resign Cesc Fabregas, the Gunners preferred option.”
“His pride impeded it.”
So it seems Wenger could have triggered a sequence of events which would have created the squad space for him to bring Fabregas back to the Emirates.
However, selling his £42.5 million signing to Bayern Munich just one-year after he bought him would have been an admission of failure and it would have been criticised because of the experience and talent Ozil possesses.
Ozil has struggled ever since a superb opening spell at Arsenal, inconsistently showing glimpses of the performances the club shelled out so much money on him for.
He’s already gone missing in big games this season (Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea away to name just two) while Fabregas has settled back down into Premier League life with ease.
Jamie Carragher recently revealed his belief that Arsene Wenger doesn’t trust Ozil to play centrally in big games, which is an explanation for why he’s been confined to a wide role with his influence limited.
In short, the ship has sailed and Wenger has stuck by his guns. It’s now up to him to get Ozil performing on those big games because Fabregas looks set for a very long spell at Chelsea.
