Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has been appointed the new Schalke coach.
The Germany club made the announcement on Tuesday morning, posting the following message on social networking site Twitter.
Schalke 04 (@s04) October 7, 2014
Di Matteo will replace Jens Keller, who had been in charge of the Royal Blues since 2012.
Schalke have been struggling in the Bundesliga this season and are currently 11th in the league table with just eight points from seven matches.
Last season the Gelsenkirchen-based outfit finished third in the German top flight, but disappointing results so far this campaign have prompted the club to take such drastic measures.
Di Matteo has been without a managerial job since November 2012 when he was sacked by Chelsea following a run of poor results.
However, just the season before, after taking over from Andre Villas-Boas, the Italian tactician had led Chelsea to Champions League and FA Cup triumphs.
