The 53-year-old had been helping the Championship club as a consultant since resigning from his managerial position at Lorient Orient last month.
The Welsh outfit had been without a manager since September 18 when former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stepped down from the position.
Cardiff owner Vincent Tan himself chose Slade as his club’s manager, and the Englishman has outlined his objectives this season.
According to BBC Sport, Slade told reporters on Tuesday that his main aim this campaign is to lead the Bluebirds to a top-six finish in the Championship.
At the moment, Cardiff are 15th in the league table with 13 points from 11 matches, six points behind sixth-placed Ipswich Town.
