Wayne Rooney’s suspension may not have come as good news to the Manchester United fans, but it certainly gave one star player a chance to start against Everton.
Spain international midfielder Juan Mata has been the one to make way for manager Louis van Gaal to accommodate Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie and Rooney in the starting line-up.
But with England international forward Rooney suspended for Sunday’s match at Old Trafford, Mata was handed the number 10 role in the Premier League clash against Everton.
And he did not disappoint.
As the stats above show, Mata provided an assist in the 2-1 win for United. The former Chelsea star teed up Angel di Maria for the game’s opening goal and also created three key chances.
The 26-year-old ended up with a laudable 90.7% pass accuracy as well, but he probably should have had more than 51 touches.
Overall, Mata gave a very encouraging performance for United and showed Van Gaal that he can play in the number 10 role with success.
