Southampton star reveals truth about 'no days off' to train rumour

Ryan Bertrand says the offer of a day off did not feel right, as Saints squad continue to fly high in Premier League despite recent blip.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman was reportedly "left in shock" when his offer of a day off from training was refused by his senior squad last month.

Following their League Cup win over Arsenal, Koeman wanted to give the Saints a day's rest ahead of a Premier League clash against Queens Park Rangers, but Koeman explained that Jose Fonte confronted him to explain that Koeman would have to rearrange plans he had with his wife as the team wanted to train.

Speaking to Sky Sports this weekend, summer recruit Ryan Bertrand has revealed that the reason why Southampton wanted to train that day rather than rest was because it "did not feel right."

He said: "I think we had a day off after the weekend and it just didn’t feel needed to be honest, we’d rather be in there. It put us in better shape for the weekend and hopefully that benefitted us."

Bertrand was speaking ahead of the club's trip to Tottenham Hotspur, one which failed to bear the club any Premier League points as Christian Eriksen's sole goal in the 40th minute ensured Spurs collected all three.

However, Bertrand could have made himself a hero as he set up Sadio Mane for a golden opportunity to leave White Hart Lane with at least a draw - but the winger squandered his chance.
