Southampton captain Jose Fonte says that his side must start taking their chances if they are to go to the next level.
The Saints have made an impressive start to the season under Ronald Koeman, but lost to Tottenham Hotspur yesterday and Fonte has blamed it on their profligacy in-front of goal.
Saints wasted a number of chances against Spurs and Fonte has called for his team to be more ruthless.
"If we want to compete against the best and be one of the best we need to go into the next level and that means perhaps taking the chances we had," he said to the Daily Echo.
“We had three or four decent chances to score.
"We need to improve on that. Obviously, we conceded a goal just before half-time and we need to be more tight at the back as well. So something to learn and something to improve.”
In the end a Christian Eriksen goal for Spurs was the difference between the two sides, but Southampton can still take heart from their start to the season.
The Saints are in the upper echelons of the table but Fonte, who has came up from League One to the Premier League with the team, is not resting on his laurels.
The Portuguese centre-back is hoping to see his side maintain their good form, which has lifted them into the upper echelons of the embryonic Premier League table and challenge the very best this year.
"This team is only developing and getting to know each other a little bit more,” he said.
“It’s a positive start, with 13 points after seven games. We need to look to the future with bright eyes and we keep on working.”
