Harry Redknapp has seemingly failed in a last-ditch attempt to bolster Queens Park Rangers’ attacking options after free transfer target Hugo Almeida completed a move to Serie A side Cesena, subject to the completion of a medical.
The Rs had previously held discussions with the 30-year-old striker over a move to Loftus Road, following his release by previous club Besiktas.
But despite the Portugal international being available on a free transfer, the two parties struggled to agree a deal, prompting Almeida and his representatives to continue discussions with a number of other clubs.
This includes newly-promoted Serie A side Cesena, who have been pursuing a deal for the former Porto and Werder Bremen athlete for much of the summer.
And despite some late interest from Dubai side Al Nasr, a report from the Italian club’s official website has revealed that Almeida has reached an agreement with the club.
The 30-year-old will now complete a medical with Cesena before being presented to the media later this week.
QPR’s failure to recruit the experienced forward is the latest setback for manager Harry Redknapp, with the club currently languishing near the foot of the Premier League table after a 2-0 loss to West Ham United on Sunday.
Rangers were thought to be keen to bring another striker on board, having also failed to complete a deal for Toronto FC star and former Redknapp favourite Jermain Defoe prior to the close of the summer transfer window.
The Rs have scored just four goals in their last eight competitive games and should they continue to struggle in front of the net, then a January bid for Defoe could be on the cards.
