Scouted by Real Madrid after catching the eye for Belgian giants Club Brugge, Australia international Matt Ryan has been tipped to head to England soon.
Remember the name Matt Ryan – he could be coming to a Premier League team near you soon after impressing in Belgium with Club Brugge.
Named the Professional Footballers’ Goalkeeper of the Year last season, in an award voted for by the players of the Belgian Pro League, Ryan also impressed for Australia at the World Cup in Brazil and is set to play a key role in January’s Asian Cup.
Still just 22, the former Central Coast Mariners youngster had previously been linked with moves to the likes of West Bromwich Albion and Hull City, while Real Madrid were also rumoured to be scouting the keeper at the backend of last season.
But despite talk of interest from Los Blancos, former Club Brugge sporting director and former Glasgow Rangers player Arnar Gretarsson believes the Socceroos star only has eyes for the English top-flight.
"I don't see him staying for much longer at Club Brugge. I think he will move to a bigger team, possibly for next season,” he said in an interview with SBS.
"I know he would like to go to the Premier League .... everybody wants to play in that league but I could also see him in the Primera Division or the Bundesliga. He definitely has the quality to play in the big three leagues.”
Ryan could gain further insight into the week-in, week-out demands of the Premier League from several of his Australia teammates, with Crystal Palace captain Mile Jedinak likely to be on hand to offer advice alongside the likes of Adam Federici and Tim Cahill.
The Socceroos are next in action against UAE in a friendly due to be played later this week.
