Labelled as one to watch since scoring on his debut for Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia at the age of just 16 years and 10 months in January 2010, Khouma Babacar went some way to justifying the hype over the weekend with a match-winning display for the Viola against Inter Milan.
Now 21, the Senegalese striker scored one and set up another for teammate and Manchester United target Juan Cuadrado in an impressive 3-0 win over the Nerazzurri.
Selected to lead the line as a lone striker against Inter by manager Vincenzo Montella, Babacar excelled in the air and was equally adept at holding up the ball and bringing others into play in a performance that must have caught the eye of several Premier League sides.
Scouted by Arsenal and Everton in his younger years , the under-20 Senegal international, who has previously been valued at just £4 million, dismissed talk of a move back in 2011, explaining instead that he needed time to develop in Italy.
"I have heard that Premier League teams are watching me, but I need to learn my trade at Fiorentina, as they are also a big team," he told Sky Sports at the time.
"Because I am strong and powerful, maybe that is why I am being linked with the Premier League ... I dream about playing there in the future, but not now. I am not ready."
Three years on and the 21-year-old appears to have announced his arrival on the European stage with a wonder goal to savour against Inter.
Dribbling with the ball on the right flank, Babacar cut inside to unleash a thunderous right-footed strike from the edge of the box that arrowed straight into the top left-hand corner of the net.
Impressive against a defence marshalled by the likes of Italy international Andrea Ranocchia alongside highly-rated Brazilian Juan and, most notably of all, Nemanja Vidic, Babacar possesses all the qualities required to excel in the Premier League.
And if he carries on in this kind of form for Fiorentina, a bid from the likes of Everton, Arsenal or any number of Premier League sides could soon be forthcoming.
