Xabi Alonso went for goal for Bayern Munich yesterday.
During his time at Liverpool Spanish international midfielder Xabi Alonso gained a reputation for attempting to score from outlandish range. In fact, he even managed to score from his own half on a couple of occasions.
The goal against Luton Town in a cup game was into an empty net. However he was well inside his own half and on his wrong foot so does not detract from the skill involved.
The one which is of course best remembered is his strike against Newcastle United. He hammered in a strike from around 70 yards beyond the desperate dive of Steve Harper - who was left embarrassed by the former Real Sociedad man.
This summer Alonso swapped Real Madrid for Bayern Munich, much to the disappointment of Liverpool fans hopeful of an eventual return, and yesterday he tried it again.
Alonso picked up the ball during Bayern's 4-0 win over Hannover 96 yesterday and decided to go for goal from an obscene distance.
It forced a good save from former Manchester United youngster Ron-Robert Zieler - who refused to get embarrassed by the former Liverpool star.
But with the starting position of German goalkeepers in the modern age usually well outside the area, don't bet against Alonso adding another wondergoal to his repertoire this campaign.
