Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is reportedly set to pick Antonio Valencia to replace Ander Herrera in the centre of the club’s midfield for their match against Everton.

The Ecuador international is known as a right-winger or emergency full-back, but the Mirror claims United are set to use him centrally with Herrera out injured.

The same report claims Robin van Persie will replace the suspended Wayne Rooney as captain, with vice-captain Darren Fletcher not expected to start.

In other news, Roy Hodgson has been speaking about Rooney’s discipline following his red card against West Ham United last weekend.

In quotes published by Goal.com, the England boss said, “People suggested there was a lack of discipline and so on but, in my dealings with him, nothing could be further from the truth.”

Rooney will miss the next three United matches, returning for the derby against Manchester City.
