Former Arsenal transfer target panned for poor performances - A bullet dodged?

Serge Aurier

Arsenal linked star Serge Aurier has made a disappointing start to life in Paris.

Paris Saint-Germain loan star Serge Aurier has come under heavy fire from the press following a disappointing start to life in the French capital.

The 21-year-old right-back was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal during the summer after an impressive campaign at Ligue 1 side Toulouse.

The Ivorian Coast international participated at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil, performing well and winning a number of admirers amongst the Gunners support.

Arsene Wenger was left with a difficult task of replacing the departing Bacary Sagna ahead of the new season, but instead of signing the highly rated Aurier, the Frenchman opted for the tried and tested Mathieu Debuchy.

Despite Debuchy’s current spell on the side-lines due to injury, the decision hasn’t turned out to be a bad one as Aurier – now on a season-long loan at Paris Saint-Germain – has come under fire for a number of poor displays.

The former Lens youth product has made a total of four Ligue 1 appearances for the reigning champions, making just eight tackles and seven interceptions.

Speaking to French publication Le10sport regarding his performances, Aurier has put his slow start down to expectations of competing with his more illustrious teammates.

“It’s not easy arriving at a club where the players are a cut above. I come from Toulouse, a team which plays well, but feels a lot different. I’m going to take my time, have less worries. Many people are concerned for me, but I’m going to find my form.”

Arsenal fans are probably happy to have Debuchy and Calum Chambers instead.
