Three areas that McNair improved in his second United game

Paddy McNair made his second appearance for Manchester United on Sunday, and he seems to be finding his confidence now.

Prior to last weekend Paddy McNair was yet to make his debut for Manchester United's senior squad.  In fact the 19-year-old had only played 13 times for the club's under-21s.

But now the centre-back has played two full matches for Louis van Gaal's club, following up his debut against West Ham United last weekend with another impressive showing against Everton.

Again the score-line was 2-1, meaning McNair is yet to be part of a defence that keeps a clean-sheet, but that is really no concern when you consider the player has stepped seamlessly into van Gaal's back-line, and appears to have gone ahead of Tyler Blackett in the pecking-order.

So how did McNair's performance against Everton compare with his debut outing against the Hammers?

As you can see below, there are three areas in which McNair improved, with his passing accuracy impooving from 83.4 per cent last weekend to 92.31 per cent this time out.  The teenager also won three duels against the Toffees, having failed to win any against West Ham.  While he won three-times as many interceptions a week after his first-team bow.

Patrick McNair Man Utd vs West Ham 06 83.64% 12 6 0 0 1 90

All three areas speak of increased confidence, with the player passing the ball better, going in for - and winning - duels on the ground and in the air - and making interceptions instead of sitting back and waiting to see how things pan out.

McNair made considerably more clearances against the Hammers but this speaks more about their style of play and the fact that the Northern Irishman had to deal with plenty of balls into the box.

Sunday's match was a different encounter, but McNair took it in his stride, and it will be interesting to see who van Gaal picks when he has the likes of Phil Jones and Jonny Evans back from injury.
