Quinn: City win sends out this message to Chelsea

Niall Quinn says that Manchester City have told Chelsea that they are not going away by beating Aston Villa tonight.

Niall Quinn believes that Manchester City have sent Chelsea a message by beating Aston Villa tonight.

City went into the weekend five points behind the Blues, but they have closed to gap to two - albeit with Chelsea having a game in hand - after beating Villa.

The win wasn't particularly comfortable, with two late goals from Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero securing their success, but it was an important one and Quinn thinks that it has made a statement to Chelsea.

“It just settles them all down because questions were being asked and they were all answered positively in the end," Quinn said to Sky Sports

“It took a long time to happen and there will be a lot of relief around the place. They won’t be jumping up and down and feeling like champions again, but they will certainly feel they’ve got the show back on the road.

“They’re back in business. That’s the best way of putting it. There’s an international break now and the players will hopefully all come back for their manager. They are saying to Chelsea: ‘We haven’t gone away. We are up and running.’”

City have lost to Stoke City at home so far this season, whilst Chelsea have remained unbeaten throughout their first six games of the campaign.

Jose Mourinho's side have looked the most impressive team in England over the opening of the campaign, but it will be interesting to see how they react now that they have City breathing down their necks.

Although the squad is packed with quality, it has been some time since they have successfully won the title and there will be pressure on them to keep their good form up.

They take on Arsenal tomorrow and know that anything other than three points will be a disappointment, after the raised expectations around Stamford Bridge as a result of their promising start.
