Defender John Stones faces a spell on the sidelines after a serious ankle injury suffered against Manchester United today.
Everton were defeated by Manchester United in the early afternoon kick-off at Old Trafford today, with goals from Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao proving enough for United to take the three points from this fixture.
For Everton it was a game that had come at a bad time. They are not in good form and have just had to travel to Krasnodar and back so they were certainly not at 100%.
But in the end they were unlucky not to get something from this game.
Leighton Baines had a penalty saved, a rare mishap. Meanwhile they found David De Gea in sensational form. He made two stunning saves toward the end of the game, one from Leon Osman and the other from Bryan Oviedo to save the victory for United.
But after the game the most disappointing thought for Everton fans was not that they had just lost, but the price they had to pay for the game.
John Stones may have been at fault for the second goal, but he has been Everton's best player in recent weeks. The young defender earned another call-up to the national team recently and was man-of-the-match in the Merseyside Derby last week.
But he fell awkwardly after going up for a header and suffered ankle ligament damage which Everton boss Roberto Martinez has simply described as 'serious'.
It means he is out of England's upcoming fixtures and could face an extended spell on the side-lines.
For Everton fans, this news was met with sadness, as expressed on Twitter...
Genuinely very gutted about John Stones. Class that lad.— Paul Edge (@Pedge77) October 5, 2014
Gutted for John Stones, a minor setback in what will be a great career. Injuries and unfit players are ruining our season though.— Just Dave (@SirDaveStephen) October 5, 2014
Gutted. Didn't play too badly but they were there for the taking. We're going to be screwed if Stones' injury is serious— Ian Phillips (@iphillips_efc) October 5, 2014
Absolutely gutted about Stones injury. Literally the single worst possible person to get injured @ this time. Comfortably our best defender.— UpperGwladysBlue (@UpperGwladysBlu) October 5, 2014

Gutted for Stones too. He's been our best player these last few weeks and now he could be missing for a while. When it rains and all that...— Tom Power (@thomp1987) October 5, 2014
Bright side take: The defense was better than it has been all year. 1-1 draw if not for Howard's blunder. Bad news: Stones is now hurt.— Chief (@AUChief) October 5, 2014
Nightmare game for everton fc and now our best player john stones likely out for a few months— Tom Pink (@tahmtahm) October 5, 2014
