Thomas Vermaelen left out of Barcelona squad v Rayo Vallecano in La Liga

Former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is still not fully fit to make his first-team debut for Barcelona.

Former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has to wait a little longer to make his competitive debut for his new club Barcelona.

The Belgium international defender joined the Spanish giants from the Gunners in the summer transfer window for a reported fee of £15 million.

However, the 28-year-old centre-back has been on the injury list due to a hamstring problem he picked up while playing for his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Vermaelen, who featured for Arsenal for five years before leaving in the summer, has returned to training and also took part in a friendly game for the youth team.

The former Ajax star, though, is not fit enough for first-team action and was left out of the Barcelona squad that will take on Rayo Vallecano away from home this evening.

It seems that Vermaelen will now have to wait until mid-October at least to make his competitive debut for Barcelona. That’s because La Liga goes into a two-week break after this weekend due to international football.

Barcelona are currently at the top of the league table with 16 points from six matches, two points clear of Valencia and Atletico Madrid.
