Sunderland finally secured their first league win of the season courtesy of a goal from Connor Wickham and a brace from Steven Fletcher.
Wickham had nodded the Black Cats into the lead after just four minutes, but Swansea City equalised 10 minutes later through Charlie Adam.
However an entertaining first half got even better when Fletcher scored on his first start since August, latching on to a Jordi Gomez cross.
Fletcher scored his second with just 11 minutes of normal-time remaining and that was enough to ensure Gus Poyet finally oversaw his first win of the campaign.
Sunderland only had three shots on target in the entire match, proving just how decisive their finishing was. In contrast, Stoke had five shots on target but could not add to their early effort.
The result means Sunderland moved up to 11th in the table while Stoke slipped to 15th.
