Spurs' top five passers revealed - Surprise leader in the stats

Vlad Chiriches

Vlad Chiriches has been Tottenham Hotspur's most accurate passer of the 2014/15 Premier League season so far.

Vlad Chiriches' error in the Europa League on Thursday may have been one which was heavily scrutinised, but his passing statistics suggest that mistake was something of a rarity.

Chiriches missed the ball when attempting to clear and then dragged back a Besiktas attacker to provide the Turkish team with a penalty and the chance to rescue a point from White Hart Lane in the closing stages.

Demba Ba duly converted the spot kick for Besiktas, who exited North-London with a valuable draw, and left Chiriches feeling red-faced.

However, in the Premier League, the Romanian defender's passing has actually been the most accurate of any Tottenham Hotspur player in their squad.

The centre-back has seemingly struggled to adapt to life in England's top flight since moving last summer, but his passing statistics so far this season highlight his ability with the ball at his feet.

Mauricio Pochettino wants his side to play possession based football and Chiriches is proving to be capable at doing just that.

Although Spurs' passing hasn't been as incisive as many supporters would have wanted it to be under their new Argentine coach, Chiriches' precision has been impressive and his completion ratio of above 94% is amongst the best in the league.

Also to feature in the list are Mousa Dembele, Jan Vertonghen, Etienne Capoue and Nabil Bentaleb, but Spurs will be hoping that their more attacking players feature as the season progresses to prove that they are carrying a greater threat.

The club have struggled to carve teams open and the fact that five defensive minded members of their squad have been their most accurate distributors sums this up.

Tottenham need to return to winning ways this weekend when they take on Southampton, but they will need an up-turn in performances from their more creative outlets if they are to get the three points.
