Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been speaking about Cesc Fabregas and why he wanted the Spanish international at Stamford Bridge.
The former Barcelona midfielder sprang something of a surprise when he returned to England last summer not to Arsenal or Manchester United – the two clubs most heavily linked with him – but Chelsea.
And yet it has been a masterstroke with the player excelling at the Blues, forming an instant and devastating understanding with his international teammate Diego Costa.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Mourinho said, “I wanted him because I know the player he is. I knew he was good for the philosophy of the team we wanted.
“I think he loves Chelsea already, the way he plays, the way he is a member of the squad, the way he lives in a little blue village.”
And for those fans wondering if this is just a temporary stop-off for a player who always felt drawn back to Spain during his time in North London, Mourinho revealed that is no longer the case.
“If you ask him if he regrets the move he would say no,” the manager said, “If you ask him, would he have made a different choice, he would say no. If you ask him where he sees himself for the next five years , he would stay at Chelsea, so he’s completely committed to Chelsea.”
That will be music to the ears of Blues fans, who have seen the player return to England and perform as if he has never been away.
While Costa has been scoring the goals to fire the club up the table, Fabregas has been laying many of those on a plate for his countryman, and in time he could prove to be every bit as vital to this Chelsea side as his headline-making teammate.
