Barcelona fans react to Pique to Manchester United rumours

Gerard Pique

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been linked with a return to Manchester United.

According to reports in the Daily Star, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been linked with a January move to his former club Manchester United.

The Red Devils have struggled defensively this term following the summer departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and central defence appears to be Louis van Gaal’s next area to strengthen.

The Dutch coach has bemoaned a lack of injuries to a backline which has conceded an alarming nine goals in just six Premier League appearances.

Pique has had a previous four-year stint at United under the guidance of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, but he returned to Barcelona in 2008 after failing to nail down a first-team spot.

The Spanish international has gone on to win trophy galore with the Catalan giants, but after last season’s disappointing campaign, Pique has seen his place come under threat from new signing Jeremy Mathieu.

The Daily Star go on to state that the 27-year-old is unhappy playing second fiddle to Mathieu and Mascherano, and is open to a return to Old Trafford in the near future.

As Spanish publication Diario Sport reported the rumours in Spain, a number of Barcelona supporters had their say on the comments section below.

Surprisingly, a fair number feel the defender is no longer the commanding rock at the back of previous years with a section of the Nou Camp faithful happy to see him move on should the club receive a good bid.

Here is a snippet of some of the best quotes:

“He should have gone two years ago. The departure of Guardiola was the end of him.”

“Pique has been resting on his laurels for too long and if he’s not willing to return to his best, then it’s better if he goes.”

“He looked a top defender before because Puyol did the work of both of them. He has always been a problem, and I hope he goes even if it’s a gift.”

“He’s a good defender but he needs to concentrate on his football.”

“He needs to buck his ideas up and stop giving away cheap opportunities.”

“It would be a king’s gift to Barcelona. It would be the best signing for Barca. Please Pique go and play in England.”

“This kid isn’t the Pique that I knew. He is nothing without Puyol at his side.”

“In January? Why wait so long!”

“He should go. The moment has arrived for Bartra to take his place and justly so for playing better than Pique has for three consecutive seasons.”

“If he wants to go he should, I don’t see him motivated here.”

“This was the summer to have sold Pique and bought Hummels in his place.”

“With pleasure we will help him pack his bags. England awaits!”
