Arsenal legend Martin Keown comments on Danny Welbeck-Thierry Henry comparisons

Welbeck & Bonucci England vs Italy Euro 2012

Arsenal great Martin Keown has his say on suggestions that Danny Welbeck can become as good as Thierry Henry.

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck’s truly sensational hat-trick against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday has once again sparked comparisons with Thierry Henry.

Often deployed out wide at Manchester United, the England international struggled to find the back of the net regularly, but playing in his natural position as a striker at Arsenal, the 23-year-old seems to have found his goalscoring touch.

When Henry arrived at Arsenal back in 1999, he was also being misused as a winger. Gunners manager Arsene Wenger played him as a centre-forward, and the rest is history.

There have been suggestions that the same thing could happen with Welbeck, who moved to the North London outfit from United for a reported transfer fee of £16 million on deadline day.

But can Welbeck become the ‘next Thierry Henry’? Arsenal legend Martin Keown, who was a teammate of the Frenchman at the Gunners, has his say.

‘Well, it’s only one game but Welbeck has certainly made a good start’, the former England international told the Daily Mail. ‘I was doing the commentary last night and I could see lots of similarities, particularly with the way he finished...

‘One of his (Henry’s) favourite finishes was to run off the last defender, run around the ball and tuck it in the opposite corner. Sound familiar? It was his stock finish and if Welbeck can get anywhere near that level of consistency he will prove an excellent signing.

‘What we haven’t yet seen from Welbeck is the ability to beat half a team. Henry did that against the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool and obviously there is a long, long way to go before Welbeck can think about hitting the heights of Henry’.

As Keown points out, Welbeck needs to be more consistent in scoring goals. At 23, there is enough time for the England international to improve and develop himself, but only time will tell if he can emulate Henry.
