Liverpool loanee could face spell on the sidelines after injury

Portuguese defender Tiago Ilori had to be replaced after 30 minutes of Bordeaux's 1-0 loss to Stade de Reims on Friday night.

Girondins de Bordeaux were dealt a huge blow last night. Not only did they taste defeat away at struggling Stade de Reims, but they also lost the services of on loan Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori. After just 30 minutes the defender suffered a muscle problem and had to leave the pitch. Minutes later Bordeaux conceded the only goal of the game as they would go on to lose 1-0 in the Champagne region.

Ilori has performed well this season under new Bordeaux boss Willy Sagnol and it will be a disappointing loss for the side that started the week in second place if he is set to miss out for a few weeks.

The defender will undergo tests later on today to determine the damage done. Bordeaux are also without their captain and sometimes partner to Ilori, Ludovic Sané, and so any lengthy absence will affect Bordeaux’s challenge to finish in the top three.

Bordeaux travelled to Reims on Friday night and were expected to come away with all three points, but the home side, who had lost two straight, kept it tight and hit Bordeaux with a sucker punch.

Minutes after Ilori left the field Reims attacked down the right, the shot from Olivier Fortes took a deflection off former West Ham United defender Julien Faubert. It looked like the original shot was going on target but the official French league site has awarded the goal to Faubert.

It was a chance missed for Sagnol’s side to move up to first place and with Paris Saint-Germain, Caen and Toulouse to come in the next three match days, they will need to shop that Ilori is able to return sooner rather than later.

Ilori has made four appearances since making the loan move at the end of August. He even picked up his first goal for his new club in the 1-1 draw against Saint-Etienne. It is a set-back for Liverpool too. Ilori has come to France to gain experience in first team football. Hopefully for both Bordeaux and Liverpool the Portuguese defender won’t be out for sustained period of time.
