Havard Nordtveit showed what they taught him in North London with this strike.

Havard Nordtveit arrived at Arsenal with all the hope of potentially becoming a first-team player for the Gunners.

The highly rated Norwegian youth international was signed from Haugesund and dubbed the ‘best defensive talent in Europe’ by former Norway coach Mils Johan Semb when asked about the move.

But Nordtveit never settled at Arsenal. He never earned a position to call his own. He featured at centre-back and right-back while at the club and on loan spells with Salamanca and Lillestrom never truly looking comfortable in either role.

In the end he went out on loan to Nurnberg and joined Borussia Monchengladbach in 2011.

Last night the Norwegian international caught the eye once again, banging in a sensational strike against FC Zurich in the UEFA Europa League.

Gladbach were 1-0 down to a goal from Franck Etoundi in Switzerland, but only for two minutes, after Nortdveit smashed in a 30-yard screamer.

It was his first goal in European competition for the club and the eighth goal of his professional career.

It may have not worked out for Nordtveit in North London, but at least he is making an impact in Germany.
