Tottenham defender Vlad Chiriches has commented on his calamitous defending against Besiktas.
Tottenham defender Vlad Chiriches has spoken out after his Europa League nightmare.
The centre-back conceded a farcical last minute penalty against Besiktas, swiping an air-shot when attempting a clearance, and making a handball as he tried to atone for his error.
He was roundly criticised by watching fans and pundits, and has accepted he was not up to scratch.
Chiriches did however attempt to offer a reason why he was below par, blaming his fitness.
Romanian football journalist Emanuel Rosu detailed quotes via Twitter Chiriches made to a national outlet in his homeland., Digisport.
#thfc defender Chiriches for Digisport: 'I know I didn't play well lately, but I'm working very hard at the moment. I'm still not 100% fit'— Emanuel Roşu (@Emishor) October 3, 2014
Chiriches: 'I know how fans are thinking, I hope they will forget the bad things after my first good game'— Emanuel Roşu (@Emishor) October 3, 2014
Chiriches for Digisport: 'I know myself. I'm sure I'll get over this. I'm working like mad to do it' #thfc— Emanuel Roşu (@Emishor) October 3, 2014
Chiriches, 24, has played only three games this season in all competitions, and looking at his performance on Thursday night it's certainly fair to say he is lacking match sharpness, even if the fitness remains a debatable point.
It's credible, given the type of mistake he made was late in the game and symptomatic of a player who was tiring and losing concentration, but Tottenham need improvement.
Mauricio Pochettino publicly refused to lambast the defender for his mistake, because it's clear Chiriches is already holding himself accountable, and the player's determination to make amends can't be questioned, only doubts over his ability remain.
