Demba Ba’s late spot-kick saw Tottenham Hotspur held to a 1-1 draw at home to Besiktas in their second Europa League Group C matchup.
The former Chelsea man converted in the 89th-minute after Vlad Chiriches handled in the area, having let a weighted ball to Mustaka Pektemek slip through his legs into the path of the striker.
An in-form Harry Kane had given Spurs the lead on 27 minutes, when the 21-year-old surged forward before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Tolga Zengin from the edge of the box, but their lead never quite looked secure from there.
With the Turkish side recording 24 shots on goal, Hugo Lloris was forced to pull off several stunning saves to keep his side in front, until Chiriches’s glaring error saw his hard work come undone.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino refused to blame the Romanian centre-back for the two dropped points, however, despite confessing his frustration at a second successive stalemate in Europe.
‘In football you always can make a mistake. It was an unlucky action, a difficult action in this moment,’ he told reporters after the match.
‘He made one mistake after another mistake, but we need to accept it because this is football.
‘I am very disappointed, I am angry, I am frustrated and all that you want to say, but it is 1-1 in the end.
‘We conceded in the last minute, which is very disappointing, and maybe frustrating. It is hard to accept this.’
Fans, on the other hands, were less forgiving, with a hostile reaction greeting the £8.5 million defender upon the final whistle.
Chiriches last 2 performances can only be explained as out of body experiences. Player appears not present, engaged, awake or conscious— Ergo (@SniersMoregut) October 2, 2014
Signed Paulinho off last season but really hoped Chiriches could make the most of his natural talent and skill. Sadly there's no brain there— SPURStalk (@SPURS_talk_) October 2, 2014
Turns out Chiriches was our next Goran Bunjevcevic— SpudsToday (@TottenhamToday) October 2, 2014
Chiriches has some serious soul searching to do though if he wants to stay a spurs player. I wonder if he will get another chance before Dec— Andrew Dunne Jr. (@WayOverDunne) October 2, 2014

Remember when Chiriches agent said he'd use as a stepping stone to Chelsea? Lol— Charlie (@RantingSpurs) October 2, 2014
The only beneficiary from Chiriches' performance tonight is Ben Davies. Frighteningly bad. As in, 'how can he be a professional?' level bad.— Adam Nathan (@adamdnathan) October 2, 2014
Chiriches is awful, Paulinho is awful, Townsend is pretty awful. You can't win a game with players like that in the side.— Tom (@tomtkkellard) October 2, 2014
I think make a wish foundation have done more than enough for chiriches now— young victor meldrew (@ShaunBiggs1) October 2, 2014
Chiriches is just awful. Just... awful. Slow, can't pass and indecisive.— Spencer_thfc (@SpencerDungey) October 2, 2014
Chiriches was absolutely dreadful all night, numerous self made problems, which damage the team confidence - simply not good enough ...— Sean Gallagher (@seangall14) October 2, 2014
That was something else from Chiriches tonight. Truly mind-bendingly awful.— Phil Atkins (@flatkins) October 2, 2014
