On this day: Chelsea 'agreed deal' for current £40m United target

On the 3rd October 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United and Chelsea

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 3rd October 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 3rd October 2013…

Otamendi 'done'

A year ago today and it was being reported that Chelsea had agreed a deal in principle to sign Argentine defender Nicolas Otamendi from Porto.

The talented defender was said to be on his way to the club by Spanish publication Marca - with his release clause of just £9.5 million.

But despite the reports of a deal being 'done' that did not prove to be the case. Otamendi instead signed on for Valencia in February, playing for Atletico Mineiro on loan, until the summer.

Manchester United were heavily interested in him but missed out. However they are said to be keen once again, but will have to pay £40 million for him.

Athletic Bilbao were fighting to keep hold of Ander Herrera, as Manchester United loitered over his potential signature.

Herrera was the subject of a bid from United in the summer, but it collapsed on deadline day in farcical fashion.

So Bilbao president Josu Urrutia made it clear that Herrera was going nowhere:

I don't know what other teams will do, but I consider the Herrera issue to be closed. Ander has a contract until 2016. All players have to focus on giving Athletic all you can give."

But Herrera bought out his contract a little over a year later and did sign for Manchester United.
