While the likes of Ayoze Perez, Facundo Ferreyra and Emmanuel Riviere continue to toil in front of goal for Newcastle United, one man who caught the eye of the Magpies over the summer is busy making waves on the continent.
At 29, the signing of Red Bull Salzburg striker Jonathan Soriano was never likely to be one for the future, but that did not stop the Toon from showing interest in the £5-million-rated star, who had caught the eye of several clubs across the continent after finishing top scorer in the Europa League.
A tally of eight goals – including one memorable effort in Salzburg’s knockout stage triumph over Ajax – was enough to see him take the individual award.
And while the Magpies ultimately opted against tabling a bid, Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew could certainly do with the former Barcelona B and Espanyol man now.
While Perez, Ferreyra and Riviere have yet to rack up a Premier League goal between them, Soriano is already up and running in the Europa League, having scored on Matchday One in Salzburg’s 2-2 draw with Celtic.
He followed that up this week with another fine goal against group minnow Astra with the Austrian club looking good to progress out of the group stage alongside the Bhoys.
All told, Soriano has scored 18 goals in 17 appearances for his Red Bull-backed employers and if that kind of form continues, Newcastle United could do worse than take another look at the Spaniard.
Relive Soriano’s special goal against Ajax – should Newcastle try to sign him in January?
