Roberto Martinez says that he couldn't be prouder of Samuel Eto'o's performance for Everton last night.

The experienced centre-forward scored the goal that earned his side a point against Russian opponents FK Krasnodar in a game which the Toffees found a difficult encounter.

Everton struggled to get into the game in the early stages, but Eto'o took his chance when it came and it was a display that highlighted why he was brought to Goodison Park over the summer.

It was also a performance that evidenced the reasons why Martinez picked him, with the Spanish boss admitted that his experience was crucial for the team. as they look to adapt to playing European football

"Samuel was waiting for that moment, was very composed, he got in good pockets of space and the finish was of the highest quality," Martinez is quoted as saying by the Shields Gazette. "I was delighted for him.

"The big thing about Samuel Eto'o is experience in European competition, and if anyone was going to have a chance and score a goal, it was going to be him.

"That was his role today - he used his experience and know-how. He came up with the goal and that is why he proved his value.

"I couldn't be prouder of his performance in terms of showing how to wait for your moment and then using it."

Eto'o has had to play a backseat role since arriving at Everton on a free-tranfser over the summer, but he will be hoping that Martinez will be convinced to start with him more often now.

The front-man brings experience to a side who have struggled to find their best form over the opening part of the season.

The club are currently in the bottom-half after failing to hit the heights that they did in Martinez's first season in charge and they know that they will need to improve quickly if they are claim a spot in the European places once again.

Martinez's side raised expectations after a big spending summer, but it has taken a while for their side to click into gear this season.

That said, the are making good progress in the Europa League and a draw against their Russian opponents last night has put them in a commanding position in their group.
