Southampton's Jose Fonte says that he had to convince a number of players to stay at the club this summer.
Southampton defender Jose Fonte has revealed that he had to convince a large amount of his teammates to stay at the club over the summer.
Southampton lost a number of their protagonists from last season during the previous transfer window, but it seems that Fonte may have stopped the damage being worse.
The likes of Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers all departed St. Mary's during the summer months, but Fonte believes more players would have left if it wasn't for his encouraging words.
"I had to talk with a lot of players, I tried to assure them and make them believe that we still have the qualities and capability to do well," he said to the Daily Star.
"I'm pleased we've been showing that we can compete and be at the top."
At the moment the Saints are proving Fonte to be correct and the mass exodus only appears to have improved rather than hampered them.
The centre-back has been a mainstay in Ronald Koeman's team who have surpassed all expectations so far.
The south-coast club have climbed to second in the Premier League table and played some eye-catching football in doing so.
The likes of Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle look brilliant additions, whilst the squad members who were at the side last season have raised their games.
Southampton got to eighth position in the table last year, but already there is talk of bettering that finish this time around.
They travel to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend where they will be looking to continue their impressive run of form and, in-turn, get one over their former manager Mauricio Pochettino who departed St. Mary's for White Hart Lane earlier in the year.
