Ex-Liverpool man to celebrate goal with contract power play

Alberto Aquilani scored in Fiorentina's 3-0 win over Dinamo Minsk and may see this as an opportune moment to re-enter contract talks.

The future of former Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani is up in the air with his contract expiring at the end of the season.

Aquilani's time at Liverpool was dogged by injury and he hasn't had the easiest of times back in his homeland.

But the 30-year-old has been excellent so far this season and scored a well-executed volley in Fiorentina's 3-0 Europa League win against Dinamo Minsk.

And La Gazzetta dello Sport believes that Aquilani is in a strong position to enter talks over a contract renewal given that Fiorentina risk losing him for free next summer.

It is a massive about-turn after Aquilani was told only a month ago that he would need to take a sizeable pay cut if he was to secure an extension.

Things can change quickly in football and Aquilani's form coupled with injury problems at the Stadio Artemio Franchi have seen his stock rise rapidly.

"Losing him would not be good news for Vincenzo Montella and the Viola given that so far this season he has been one of Fiorentina's most inspired players," the paper asserts.

Aquilani may feel he is now able to demand a lucrative extension and if he keeps playing as he is there will be other options should Fiorentina refuse.
