Why jeering Chelsea star Diego Costa could backfire

Chelsea striker Diego Costa says that being jeered at by opposition fans fires him up even more.

Diego Costa has been on fire for Chelsea so far this season and has been arguably the best player in the Premier League.

Signed from Atletico Madrid for a reported transfer fee of £32 million in the summer transfer window, the Spain international striker has taken to English football like a duck to water.

Costs is very popular among the Chelsea fans, but the opposition supporters will surely want him to fail against their team. But if they try to boo and jeer him in order to make him lose his concentration, then they could just be firing him up even more.

‘I always use it as motivation’, Costa told the FourFourTwo magazine. ‘The more you shout at me, the more it increases my chances of scoring a goal.

‘Sticking one in the back of the net is the best response to any fans who are on your case. I don’t worry about what opposition supporters sing. They’re entitled to say what they like – they’ve paid to be there – but I don’t really care’

‘A hostile atmosphere is why you play football – it’s what inspires you to compete. Without that extra part of me, I feel there’s something missing from Diego Costa. I need that fire’.

Costa has an aggressive side to his game which he more often than not uses constructively to get the best out of himself.

The 25-year-old has received yellow cards and red cards for getting angry on the pitch, but it seems that he is not concerned with what the opposition fans think of him.
