Pochettino: Southampton are the best team right now

Southampton Huddle

The Spurs boss appeared to call his former club the form team of the Premier League.

Ahead of his side's Europa League clash with Besiktas, Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has been fielding questions about his side's weekend opposition.

That opposition is Southampton, who happen to be his former side.

And the Argentine believes Ronald Koeman's Saints are currently the form team of the Premier League.

"After [Besiktas], we have Southampton," Pochettino told reporters at a pre-match press conference.

"I think it's the best team at the moment. It's a very tough game we have ahead."

The perception is that Pochettino meant the best team in the Premier League right now, which would no doubt imply they are on better form than Spurs at the moment.

That much is clear as far as the table is concerned, though the Argentine will no doubt hope his side can be considered favourites as they host the Saints at White Hart Lane this weekend.

After six games, Southampton are second in the Premier League table with 13 points. Tottenham, by contrast, are eighth with eight, which is where the Saints finished in the table last year under Pochettino's command.

In the meantime, Spurs face Besiktas in the Europa League tonight, also at White Hart Lane, where they will hope to register their first European win of the group stages.
