Liverpool slumped to another defeat on Wednesday night, this time falling 1-0 to Swiss side Basel in the Champions League as Marco Streller bagged the only game of the game. The result is another blow to Reds boss Brendan Rodgers who has seen his side make a difficult start to the season, but left back Jose Enrique is targeting a win over Real Madrid in their next Champions League game.
The game at Basel once again saw Lazar Markovic turn in a disappointing display. The Serbian, who arrived at Anfield for around £20m from Benfica this summer, had yet to impress under Rodgers, and was hauled off after 81 minutes last night. Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce says that Markovic has been a 'huge disappointment'.
"Markovic has been a huge disappointment, so far," said Pearce on talkSPORT. "I know he’s still young, 20-years of age adapting to life in a new country and a new language. He looks a world away from what Liverpool thought they were getting."
Markovic wasn't the only one to disappoint in Switzerland though, as Mario Balotelli drew another blank. Manager Rodgers has called for the Italian to improve in front of goal ahead of this weekend's home game against West Bromwich Albion.
"In terms of his behaviour he is consciously trying to work hard at the aspects of the game of which we demand here in terms of intensity and work-rate. In terms of goals he needs to improve, it is as simple as that," he said.
Meanwhile, rumours continue to suggest that striker Daniel Sturridge is poised to pen a new five-year contract worth £150,000 per week, and Rodgers admitted that talks have been held between Sturridge's agent and the club in a bid to strike a deal.
"There are talks ongoing with his representatives and there is no more news other than that," said Rodgers.
