Reds supporters were witness to a 1-0 defeat against Swiss opposition in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
Liverpool supporters have leaped to the defence of £16 million summer signing Mario Balotelli following a disappointing team performance as the Anfield outfit slumped to a 1-0 loss to FC Basel in the second round of group stage fixtures in the Champions League competition.
Fabian Schar, Mohamed El Nenny and Serey Die all performed admirably for the Swiss side but, aside from Simon Mignolet, many Liverpool players will have disappointed manager Brendan Rodgers.
Die, Ahmed Hamoudi and a number of other Basel stars all tested Mignolet and the shot-stopper could do little about Marco Streller's match-winning goal.
Last month, Rodgers explained that the way to best utilise star striker Mario Balotelli would be to have him positioned in the opposition box. Or, failing that, at least the final third. That way, the Italian's physical attributes were fully taken advantage of.
However, at at St Jakob-Park, Balotelli would often receive a touch on the football at the half-way line… or even in the defensive half, which thus limited the impact he could have in the attacking zone.
Basel's playing staff also did their best to frustrate the £16 million recruit in order to provoke a reaction and, while he threatened to do so, Liverpool supporters believe he should not be scapegoated for an abject team performance - particularly when players like Lazar Markovic and Raheem Sterling performed far worse…
Have any of our new signings actually made us better? Lallana, Lovren, manq, markovic, ballo? No #ynwa— Tommy Soleng (@TommySoleng) October 1, 2014
