Former Tottenham Hotspur star Ledley King picks his best XI

Former Tottenham Hotspur and England international defender Ledley King picks his best XI comprising of his (ex-)teammates and opponents.

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ledley King has listed the best XI comprising of his (ex-)teammates and opponents to the FourFourTwo magazine.

The former England international, whose career was severely hampered by injuries, has gone for a 4-5-1 formation.

Heurelho Gomes

Stephen Carr-Lilian Thuram-Rio Ferdinand-Ashley Cole

Cristiano Ronaldo-Zinedine Zidane-Steven Gerrard-Juan Roman Riquelme-Gareth Bale

Thierry Henry

Many Tottenham and general football fans will be surprised that King has named Heurelho Gomes as the goalkeeper in the team.

The 33-year-old, now at Watford, was on the books of Spurs from 2008 until 2014, but he was not always convincing.

Explaining his decision about the Brazilian, King said: ‘What sets him apart is his athleticism. It allows him to make saves the rest could only dream of’.

Stephen Carr is another surprise choice, especially when one considers that Gary Neville was very much in form for Manchester Unite for most of the period that King was active.

Leaving United legend Ryan Giggs for Gareth Bale could also surprise some, but it will be hard to argue against any of the other choices of King, who himself conceded his disappointment at not being able to include Paul Scholes in his XI.
