Manchester United defender Tom Thorpe has been speaking following his debut for the senior team.
The 21-year-old came on as a late substitute in the 2-1 win over West Ham United on Saturday, to follow in the footsteps of his young teammate Paddy McNair who was also making his debut in that game.
Many expected Thorpe to break through ahead of McNair and Tyler Blackett this season considering his age and his performances for the under-21s. However despite being a little late to the party, he has now become the latest United defender to experience first-team action.
In an interview with MUTV, Thorpe has revealed what he thought of McNair’s performance and his own hopes for the future.
“Paddy did really well,” the centre-back said. “His header basically saved a goal so he did great.
“Obviously I was delighted to get on and hopefully there is more to come. I was very pleased, being a United fan and having been there from such a young age. To come through and get my first-team debut I was very happy.”
With Jonny Evans and Phil Jones soon returning from injury and Tyler Blackett from suspension, it remains to be seen how many more chances Thorpe will get this season. But with no new defenders arriving at the club until January at the earliest, the younger players will know they have chances to impress van Gaal in the short-term.
“As soon as you get a little bit, you want more and hopefully there will be,” Thorpe added, but that is up to van Gaal…
