United morning news: Competition for Swiss star; Hummels alternative linked

Ricardo Rodriguez

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

The next transfer window may not be open for another three months, but that has not stopped the speculation linking Manchester United with more new arrivals.

The Daily Star has followed up on its previous claims that Louis van Gaal remains interested in Swiss international Ricardo Rodriguez by claiming they face competition from Bayern Munich.

The thing is: United already have two attack-minded left-backs at their disposal in the form of Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo so bringing in a third makes little sense when they are so desperate for experienced centre-backs.

Speaking of which, the Mirror has thrown a Borussia Dortmund player into the hypothetical hat, and no, it is not Mats Hummels.

With the German international seemingly ruling out a move away from the Bundesliga in the short term, his defensive partner Nevan Subotic has been linked, somewhat subtly, with a possible move to United.

Mentioned in the final paragraph on a report regarding Hummels, Subotic would improve United’s back-line, but this may be another rumour without legs.
