This evening’s game between Arsenal and Galatasaray at the Emirates Stadium provides a chance for Arsenal fans to watch how German star Mesut Ozil gets on against the high profile Wesley Sneijder.
Sneijder could well have ended up in the Premier League at some point in his career with Chelsea and Manchester United previously linked with making moves for him, but he represents Turkey and Ozil’s job this evening is to outperform him.
The stats from the first games of Arsenal and Galatasaray demonstrate just how much Ozil struggled away at Borussia Dortmund before he was replaced just after the hour mark.
Sneijder is ahead in terms of attempts, duels won, passes and touches based on the first fixture for each side in the Champions League this season.
However, one area Ozil was better than Sneijder is integral to how the Gunners play; he wasn’t dispossessed once during the 2-0 defeat in Germany. Arsenal are a heavily possession based side and Ozil protects the ball and allows them to build pressure.
His form has improved recently for Arsenal, as injuries are allowing him to play centrally where there is less responsibility on him to work hard defensively, which is not his best area.
Arsenal need to respond with three points this evening as they look to get their qualification campaign for the knock out round back on track.
