On this day: Chelsea 'willing to pay' for Spurs defender; Arsenal get apology for Higuain

Vlad Chiriches

On the 1st October 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 1st October 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 1st October 2013…

10 minute deal

Last summer there was an interesting transfer battle between Arsenal and Napoli for the services of Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Arsenal were keen on the Argentine international after he revealed plans to depart Real Madrid. But Arsene Wenger was also keen on bagging Luis Suarez, so had Higuain on the back burner.

With that in mind Napoli swooped to snap up the player as a replacement for the recently departed Edinson Cavani, who had joined Paris Saint-Germain.

But according to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis it was a deal they could have completed with ease.

He said of the deal:

"We were in the mountains with the team and I asked my people, should we call Real Madrid? In 10 minutes it was done for €38m plus add-ons. The day after we went to Venice for eight hours closed in a room and did a deal. It was easy. I didn't know Arsenal wanted him, as nobody told me. I'm sorry, Arsenal!"

Napoli snapped him up for a fee in the region of €38 million but he could not help him a year ago today, as Arsenal beat the Partenopei 2-0.

Stepping stone Spurs

Vlad Chiriches' agent put his client in the firing line a year ago, by suggesting that he wanted to play for Chelsea - a month after he joined London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Victor Becali told Romanian media:

"If he has one or two good seasons at Tottenham, Chelsea will be willing to pay a large sum to buy Chiriches. [Jose] Mourinho says he has been aware of him since he was at Real Madrid."

A year on and the idea Chelsea would pay a large sum for Chiriches, who has struggled in the Premier League, seems unlikely.

Meanwhile his agent, Becali, is currently in prison for tax evasion.

Not a good year for the pair.
