Newcastle United have confirmed that teenage defender Kevin Mbabu will make his first appearance of the season in a friendly match against Heaton Stannington on Wednesday evening, and the player quickly followed that announcement with a celebratory tweet.
The 19-year-old is yet to feature for the Magpies at any level this campaign, but it has been confirmed that he will play a part in Peter Beardsley’s side.
Mbabu has previously made 15 appearances for Newcastle’s under-21 side, but the Swiss centre-back has been side-lined through injury and this match will be the ideal opportunity for him to get some much needed game-time.
Newcastle’s senior side are currently struggling near the foot of the Premier League table, but they have a number of young players with the talent to suggest there are brighter days ahead.
Rolando Aarons has already broken into the Magpies’ first-team and Mbabu is likely to be yearning for a similar trajectory.
The teenager has been capped at every level for Switzerland from under-16 to under-19 and he will be hoping his return to injury leads to another fine season for the under-21s.
