Is this why Arsenal did not sign Julian Draxler?

Julian Draxler

Arsenal were strongly linked with Julian Draxler but his poor finishing could have been a crucial factor in their decision to look elsewhere.

For much of last season Julian Draxler was linked with a possible move to Arsenal.

The rumours really took off in the build-up to the January transfer window, and despite Arsene Wenger failing to sign a new attacker then, the rumours persisted that the Gunners could make their move for the Schalke star the following summer.

But when that summer actually rolled around, it seemed the rumour mills had had their fill of Draxler, instead linking Arsenal with a number of possible alternatives before Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck ultimately arrived at opposite ends of the summer window.

Talk earlier in the year was the Wenger had ambitions to turn Draxler into a striker as he had so effectively with both Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie.  But then rumours began to circulate that in fact the Frenchman did not feel Draxler could fulfill that role, and his latest performance in the Champions League suggests the Arsenal boss could have been right.

The 21-year-old had eight scoring attempts against Maribor on Tuesday, more than any other player in a Champions League match so far this season.  And yet he still could not find the net, let alone the winner, with the game ending 1-1.

Of his eight scoring attempts, only two were on target, while his scoring percentage of zero suggests Arsenal would not have been signing a player with the ability to become a deadly finisher had they met his reported £37.8million release-clause.

Draxler also failed play a single key pass against Maribor, but it was his wastefulness in front of goal that suggests Arsenal were wise not to move for him, instead bringing in Sanchez, who is already closing in on hero-status at the Emirates Stadium.
