Chelsea saw off a resilient Sporting Lisbon side 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, with a first-half Nemanja Matic goal enough to give Jose Mourinho’s side the victory.
The Blues faced a goalkeeper – Rui Patricio – in inspired form and Chelsea will be thankful they left Portugal with the win.
The on-loan Manchester United man scored in the Portuguese side’s opening group match against Maribor, but he failed to inspire a late comeback on Tuesday, despite having five efforts on goal.
In truth they were not exactly on goal, with all Nani’s efforts missing the target. In contrast, Hazard failed to have a single goal-scoring attempt.
The wide-men played two key passes each and it is no surprise that players famed for their dribbling ability had 15 in total, with Nani going on eight runs compared with the Chelsea player’s seven.
Hazard did however play more forward passes then the on-loan United star and also had one accurate cross – an area where Nani failed to achieve anything of note.
Neither player shone as they are capable of and while the Sporting man is likely to be disappointed by his wastefulness, Hazard will not like going a whole match without a goal-scoring chance.
But the Belgian player left with the win, and his hard work for the team means he edges it on this occasion.
