Liverpool suffered the same fate as Chelsea last season as they crashed to defeat away at Basel.
It was a poor performance all round from the Reds, with captain Steven Gerrard admitting the Swiss side 'wanted it more'.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers found himself quizzed after the game specifically on the performance of striker Mario Balotelli, who produced another at times infuriating display.
He told SkySports: "He worked hard. He needs to do more.
"Mario will get judged on what he creates and what he scores. But the boy is trying and is working hard."
The problem for Balotelli is his game looked devoid of any real quality, especially when contrasted with last season's Luis Suarez, but fans are even eagerly craving the return of Daniel Sturridge.
He failed Rodgers' test in terms of creating; Balotelli provided no key passes during the match, and the manager is right to say he needs to do more, while one of his shot attempts was a wild effort from 35 yards out which sailed high over the bar.
