4 dribbles won, 0 shot on target: Manchester United outcast Nani’s mixed Champions League night

Manchester United-owned winger Nani was in action for Sporting Lisbon against Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Manchester United may not be playing Champions League football this season, but one of the players on their books is.

Nani joined Sporting Lisbon on a season-long loan deal from the Red Devils in the summer transfer window.

Sporting are playing in Europe’s premier club competition this campaign, and Nani is one of the biggest names in their squad.

The 27-year-old featured in the Portuguese giants’ Group G clash against Chelsea at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon on Tuesday.

As expected, Nani started on the wing and swapped positions with Andre Carillo, while trying to create chances for his teammates down the middle.

Nani failed to impose himself on the match in the first half, but he came alive in the second period and was more adventurous. He needed to be so, as Sporting were 1-0 down, having conceded in the 34th minute.

The Portuguese was involved in a comical situation in the early minutes of the second half. He galloped down the left wing with the ball at his feet and then tried to find a teammate with a back-heel. The problem was that he had confused the referee with a Sporting player.

As the second half developed, Nani became more and more prominent for Sporting, running at the Chelsea defenders and trying to find the target.

However, Nani failed to shoot on goal even once and ended up a frustrating figure, but not before trying his luck with a brilliant dipping effort as Chelsea won the contest 1-0.
